The Office of Mathematics and Science at the Florida Department of Education was very pleased with the efforts in schools across Florida, in making our First Annual Science Day on May 16th a success.  Each of the four lessons at grades, 2, 5, 7, and 9-12, exemplified student-centered, inquiry-based approaches to teaching Florida's new Next Generation Standards for Science, and demonstrated that Florida is at the forefront in the national effort to improve science education for all of our students.

The Florida Association of Science Teachers (FAST) and the Florida Association of Science Supervisors (FASS), were also instrumental in supporting Florida Science Day, by offering awards to the writers of each of the four selected lessons.   Those awards included a complimentary one-year membership to FAST and paid conference registration for the October 2008 FAST annual meeting in Orlando, FL.  Additionally, $500 will be awarded by FAST for support to attend the annual meeting and $250 will be awarded by FASS.  The Office of Mathematics and Science thanks the FAST and FASS Executive Boards for their support of this initiative.
