Florida’s success in improving reading achievement in the early grades suggests that a long-term, sustained commitment at the state and local level can make a difference. During its first year, FCR-STEM will help the state and school districts lay the foundation for improving student achievement in mathematics and science over the long-term. Much of this effort will focus on helping Florida create and improve the tools that districts can use to guide reform at the local level: world-class standards and valid, reliable assessments of student learning. Once this foundation is built, extensive professional development will be needed to support teachers, principals and district staff as they implement standards and make curricular and instructional decisions. At the same time, FCR-STEM will disseminate information about practices and curricula which have a sound research base supporting their effectiveness. In areas where further knowledge is most needed, Center faculty will design and conduct research studies.
